Reconstructive Surgery

The goal of reconstructive surgery is to restore form and function to the body. Many types of injuries or problems with the human body fall under this category of surgery, including:

  • Congenital birth disorders
  • Traumatic conditions
  • Hand problems
  • Poorly healing wounds
  • Cancer reconstruction
  • Cancer excisions
  • Facial fractures
  • Nerve problems
  • Problems with prior amputations
  • Problems with healing of another surgical procedure

Reconstructive surgery can be elective or emergent, depending on the situation. The decision for the need for reconstructive surgery is made by both the patient and the surgeon and depends on the risks and benefits of the possible procedure. The surgeons in the Division of Plastic Surgery at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine are experienced in all types of reconstructive surgery.
